Excellent Breadmaker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have made 5-6 loaves so far, French and Wheat, and they've all come out perfect. I like that the recepies list some of the ingredients by weight as well as volume, I think this is more accurate.

The machine is very quiet. Bread comes out of the pan easily.

It gets very hot on the outside during baking, too hot to touch, so you have to be careful where you put it.

From bread to bricks in 3 months
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I ordered this breadmaker on Oct. 8 and initially it worked well until January 18, 2010 it began failing. It was used two to three times per week since October 13 when I received it. This past week it began making smaller and smaller loaves with hard crusts....bread bricks!! I knew the recipe and could almost make it blindfolded but because this was happening, I dug out the instruction book and tried to find a reason for it. I bought new yeast (thought perhaps that was the problem), bought fresh bread flour, measured and remeasured the water, the temperature of the water (lukewarm), etc. but the results were the same....smaller hard crusted loaves each smaller and harder than the previous one. I purchased this breadmaker because of the glowing reviews that it received but unfortunately it appears that I received a lemon.

Lots of useful options. Makes great bread.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
[Update Feb 14, 2010. The original review has been not modified. I originally gave this product 5 stars and I've changed it to 3 stars.

After making a number of great whole wheat loaves, the kneading blade was embedded in the loaf of my bread. I cut off the bottom two inches or so of the loaf of bread and broke that slice in half to retrieve the blade. I called Panansonic and they said the blade being stuck in the loaf was normal and and cutting off the bottom portion of the loaf was normal(!) to retrieve the blade.

For the first time I noticed that the blade sits very loosely on the shaft and comes off without the slightest resistance. I spoke to someone else who owns this exact bread maker and they said that their blade was also loose. Amazon sent me another bread maker. The blade on the replacement was also very loose and the pan itself was much more loose in the machine -- it rattled around even after twisting the pan into place. I'm sending back the new machine and keeping the 'old' bread maker.

According to the instructions on page 9, section 13, "If the kneading blade comes out with the bread, use a heat-resistant plastic utensil to remove it"

What type of heat-resistant plastic utensil did Panasonic have in mind? Why does it have to be plastic (maybe to not scratch the blade?) and why does it have to be heat-resistant since the loaf is already out of the machine? Also, why didn't Panasonic include this utensil? I'll try using clean needle-nose pliers to extricate the blade and see if that works.

Why is there no friction grip of any type on the blade? When I baked another loaf, the blade came off again in the loaf. I'm disappointed with the bread maker since aside from this one issue, each whole wheat loaf came out great.

End Update Feb 14, 2010]

I bought one for someone as an '09 xmas gift. He was delighted with it so I bought one too. I haven't owned a bread maker in many years since I own an old commercial size Cuisinart food processor, an old Hobart USA-made Kitchen Aid and now an Electrolux (the Swedish product, not to be confused with anything American) processor. When my last bread maker died year ago, I threw it out without regret.

I decided to give a bread machine one more chance since the price (compared to my other food processors) is so inexpensive and I'm getting to be a bit lazy. On my first try, I had a box of bread machine white bread mix lying around for some years. Came out great. But we don't eat white bread. I only make whole wheat bread.

I tried the whole wheat/bran/sesame recipe. Even with adding vital gluten, it came out somewhat like a brick. I tried it again starting with the Electrolux and kneaded it for an hour or two with resting periods in-between. Then I added the dough to the bread machine. Bread came out great.

The astute reader will have instantly noticed that I've completely contradicted myself by saying that the bread machine is great providing that the whole wheat dough is already kneaded. Yes, that's partially true. 100% whole wheat/bran is very difficult to knead and to rise properly. The bread machine completes the kneading so it's not imperative to have totally kneaded the bread before placing the whole wheat dough into the bread machine.

[If you're not making 100% whole wheat bread, then you won't experience any of my difficulties]

I noticed that the bread machine kneads, rests, kneads, rests letting the whole wheat gradually soak in the excess water. I always use the 5 hour cycle for whole wheat.

When making bread manually, for whatever reason the dough will no longer fully rise after in it's placed in the loaf pans. It rises great in the bowl but after it's punched down it won't rise in the pans. I've been making bread for many years and I have no idea why this problem started about a year ago. I'm using all of the same pans and equipment. The bread machine tidily resolves this problem.

The other problem that the bread machine takes care of is that I can now bake outdoors in the summer. The summers are too hot to cook indoors and I rarely use the oven so I don't bake bread for nearly 6 months of the year. Now after the whole wheat dough is kneaded I can take the machine outdoors and let it bake without heating up the house. The bread machine does the bulk of the work for me.

Another nice feature I discovered by accident is that the bread machine doesn't simply shut down when the bake cycle has completed. It keeps it warm preventing the loaf from becoming a soggy mess. I started a cycle and got home about 30-60 minutes late. I thought that I was going to have to throw out the soaking wet loaf. Nope. Loaf was still nice and crispy.

Bread machines have come a long way in the past 10 years.

The astute reader will have instantly noticed that I’ve completely contradicted myself by saying that the bread machine is fantastic providing that the whole wheat dough is already kneaded. Yes, that’s partially right. 100% whole wheat/bran is very hard to knead and to rise properly. The bread machine completes the kneading so it’s not imperative to have really kneaded the bread before placing the whole wheat dough into the bread machine.

[If you're not making 100% whole wheat bread, then you won't experience any of my difficulties]

I noticed that the bread machine kneads, rests, kneads, rests letting the whole wheat gradually soak in the excess water. I always use the 5 hour cycle for whole wheat.

When making bread manually, for whatever reason the dough will no longer fully rise after in it’s placed in the loaf pans. It rises fantastic in the bowl but after it’s punched down it won’t rise in the pans. I’ve been making bread for many years and I have no thought why this problem started about a year ago. I’m using all of the same pans and equipment. The bread machine tidily resolves this problem.

The other problem that the bread machine takes care of is that I can now bake outdoors in the summer. The summers are too hot to cook indoors and I rarely use the oven so I don’t bake bread for nearly 6 months of the year. Now after the whole wheat dough is kneaded I can take the machine outdoors and let it bake without heating up the house. The bread machine does the bulk of the work for me.

Another nice feature I learned by accident is that the bread machine doesn’t simply shut down when the bake cycle has completed.

Buy this bread maker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Every holiday when I made homemade yeast rolls, I got tired of them turning out great sometimes and sometimes not so good. It all had to do with the temperature of the yeast addition. When the rolls are a flop, it is a complete waste of your whole day.

I decided to get a bread maker to make my life easier. I researched bread makers and was attracted to the Panasonic because it has a separate yeast dispenser that adds the yeast at precisely the right temperature, and also has the option for making just the dough for dinner rolls.

The yeast dispensing feature was what I was most interested in and also the consistent temperature during the dough rising.

I unpacked the bread maker and decided to try the extra large basic recipe. I ran into another problem because when I went to Safeway to buy the flour, I was unable to find flour that said bread flour. I bought Gold Medal multipurpose flour and decided to give it a try.

I carefully measured the ingredients and placed the machine on my counter. I don't have a kitchen scale, so I used normal measuring cups and spoons. Some of the reviews I read said the bread machine may move during the kneading process. I was prepared to have this thing jumping all over the counter top. Guess what, the Panasonic held its ground and was so quiet. Now I have the guts to do an overnight bread thing.

I was so amazed at the result of the loaf of bread. The crust (medium) and the consistency of the bread were perfect. I have never used a bread maker before, but I am totally satisfied with the results. I can't wait to make yeast dinner rolls.

good bread
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Our daughter and son-in-law are well pleased with the Christmas gift of the Panasonic bread maker. Other than a bit smaller than usual whole wheat loaf, their other bread has been good.

Horrible!
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this because of all the excellent reviews! I've tried 3 basic recipes from the manual and none of them even mixed the ingredients. I made sure the blade and pan were seated properly but each one came out with ingredients clumped together and flour caked. I'm returning and buying another product. Not sure which one though. Very disappointed!

Easy, fresh bread every day!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this as a gag gift for my wife for Christmas, as we had recently tried to make bread from scratch, and it had gone very, very wrong. This plan backfired in a good way as we now use this little marvel almost every day.

It is incredibly simple to use; just throw in the ingredients, set it and forget it. It has a delay timer, so can be set to cook while you are at work, and there is nothing quite as soothing as the house filled with the smell of fresh bread after a long day.

Easy to clean, easy to use, and it even comes with a few great recipies. We now use it to make any dough bases, so cook everything from french bread to pizzas.

I bought this model because of the Amazon ratings, and they were very accurate.

Highly recommended for anyone, novice cook to pro.

Great bread so far!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought this for my wife as a Christmas present(She requested it). Have made about a dozen loaves of bread without a problem. The timer feature is a nice addition not found on many other bread machines. You can load the ingredients in the morning and set the timer to have it done right before you get home. Clean up could not be easier. Also purchased the Betty Crocker's Best Bread Machine Cookbook: The Goodness of Homemade Bread the Easy Way together these two products make a winning team. Highly recommend this product.

meem
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I had a Panasonic bread maker that was given to me as a gift in 1991. I put it through some heavy use, supplying my family and friends with home made bread almost weekly until about 1 yr ago. The rubber seals in the bottom of the pan finally disintegrated. I searched all over to find a replacement piece to no avail. It was to old and that part was no longer available. My husband finally decided to buy me a new bread machine. He found a great deal on another brand. After multiple attempts to recreate the wonderful bread that we had become accustom to with no success; my husband bought me the updated version of my original Panasonic bread maker and we are now eating our wonderful bread again. It is worth every penny!!

Good bread maker
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought the Panasonic SD-YD250 as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend at her request. I selected this particular model and brand because of the reviews I had read about this product. Received the product within 5 days as usual from Amazon.com. My girlfriend couldn't wait until Christmas, so I gave it to her around mid December, and she has been using it a couple of times a week since then. She tells me that she is very happy with this bread maker. We use it mainly to make healthy whole grain breads, and I can tell you that it makes excellent bread. Of course that's not all it can do, it can make pizza dough among other things. But like I said we use it mainly for bread. I'll let another reviewer comment on the other things this bread maker can make. We are very pleased with the results of the machine, and I'm glad that I spent the extra money for this product versus a cheaper one. Just one more think I'd like to mention, and that is the ability to put all your ingredients into the machine, and set it to start hours later, say just before breakfast. There's nothing like waking up to the smell of fresh bread and coffee.

We gave our daughter and her husband one for Christmas, and they are very pleased with the ease of use and quality of bread it produces.

Great way to make bread
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This machine makes delicious bread and is very easy to use and to clean. My 15 year old son now makes all the bread we eat. Two small flaws: if you leave the bread in the machine too long it burns. The stirring arm makes a small slanted hole in the bread.

Breadmaker works great!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We've had a great experience with this product. After making a variety of breads with different settings we have no qualms about the machine. I think when you read dissenting reviews you are seeing the anomalies with the machine, for the overall consensus is that people like the machine.

Great Bread Machine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have tried 6 of the recipes provided for this bread machine, and all are excellent. The quick bake option produces a slightly denser bread, but still very delicious. The whole wheat cycle is long, 5 hours, but the product is well worth the wait. The bread comes out easily, and so far has not gotten stuck in the pan.
My previous bread machine had a viewing window, so I miss that feature, but this machine produces a much better bread (I can do without the window.)

Good bread for a little too much dough
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I like it a lot. Assuming you use fresh ingredients and follow precisely the included recipes, it turns out good every time.
Only gripes:
1. A little pricey for a basic machine.
2. Can't seem to get the crust light. Even medium comes out a little hard sometimes for my liking.
3. Using any bread machine recipes other than the included ones results in spotty outcomes. Wish it was a bit more forgiving.
But I used to have the Breadman Ultimate (actual tried 2 in row) and could never get reliable edible loaves out of either of them. So this was a big improvement.

Panasonic SD-YD250
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Years ago my husband bought me an automatic bread maker for a wedding anniversary present. At that time I had been making very good bread by hand for many years. I was skeptical and somewhat insulted. To sweeten the gift he promised to make all the bread. He has made all the bread we eat for more than 25 years. This recent purchase is his third bread maker--bread makers do not seem to last forever. The Panasonic SD-YD250 is proving to be very satisfactory. He would give it a 5 star except he wishes he could over ride the built in cycles. I Hope other people have as much good luck with their bread maker as I have had with mine.

Bread Maker
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have made 3 loaves of bread in this breakmaker and have been very pleased with the results. The only thing i wish were different is that the digital control pad on top is hard to see unless you have a bright light overhead.

Fell Of the Counter and Still works
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had this machine for a number of years. My husband was making pizza dough on Friday night and the machine worked itself off of the counter. To my amazement we plugged it back in and even with pieces broken on it it still works. I am ordering a new one just in case this one stops working. I love this machine.

perfect loaves every time
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had only one bread machine in my life prior to the Panasonic, and that was a Breadman TR-800 which I had for about 12 years. The Panasonic is light years better. It makes perfect loaves of bread every time, even when I do not precisely measure out the ingredients. The loaves of bread are never soggy or sunken or poor in texture. The crust turns out as though it were baked in an oven. It completely mixes the ingredients. The opacity of the lid is no problem at all. The long baking times are a hassle, but I suspect is a factor behind the quality of the final product. I regret not having scrapped my Breadman years earlier in favor of this one.

Panasonic SD-YD250 Bread Maker
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
We bought this bread maker because of the positive reviews. The first loaf, made on the rapid bake setting turned out great, but subsequent loaves attempted on that setting and the bake setting did not rise, and were coated with a thick layer of flour. We then tried the sandwich loaf setting, and that turned out a fine loaf of bread, and we have been using that setting successfully since. We've also used it to make pizza dough, and that's worked fine as well.

It is a darn fine breadmaker!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I make mostly whole grain breads and had a Mitsubishi bread maker for about 18 years. I had tried a different brand after my Mitsubishi bit the dust and it couldn't handle the heavier flours. The Panasonic took a little getting used to because the settings are different but it is easy to follow and makes very nice bread. I am very pleased with my purchase!!

panasonic bread machine
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
THE ORIGINAL PANASONIC MACHINE WAS DEFECTIVE AND RETURNED FOR AN EXCHANGE WHICH WAS RECEIVED O.K.

THE REPLACEMENT MACHINE HAS PERFORMED VERY WELL SO FAR.

I PURCHASED THIS MACHINE BECAUSE OF ITS HIGH RATING.

IT WAS PURCHASED TO REPLACE A SOJIRUSHI I'VE HAD FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND WORKED GREAT UNTIL IT DIED.

THE SOJUSHI MACHINES HAVE PRICED THEMSELVES OUT OF BUSINESS, THE REASON FOR THE CHANGE.

THE PANASONIC MACHINE IS EXCELLENT, BUT A LITTLE BEHIND THE SOJIRUSHI IN FEATURES.

Disappointed
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I make bread once a week for our lunches. This is my third breadmaker, my last one being a "Breadman". "Breadman" has been sold to a new company, and it seems you can't get parts anymore, and since I have always likee Panasonic items, I decided to try this machine (also, it had a lot of good reviews). Why am I disappointed?? I had accumulated about 20+ receipes with my "Breadman", and they are not turning out the same. The SD-YD250 will not let me choose the crust for my wheat breads, so when I use the wheat setting, the bread is done much more than I prefer. I have tried using the basic setting on my wheat breads, and it helps, but not a lot. Also, my loaves sometimes come out really misshapped. Yesterday I tried one of my very favorite receipes in the Panasonic, and it came out not looking like a loaf of bread at all, with a large swirl along the top, and much fatter at one end than the other. I also forgot to use the basic setting, put in on the wheat setting, and it was way too dark. It seems when I use receipes for all white bread, or a combination of white and wheat, the loaves are shapely pretty well, but my all wheat receipes, forget it. So if I could, I would return it, since I simply don't like my bread baked so dark. I do love the heavy duty pan, though - the "Breadman" was quite thin, but the SD-YD250 has a good, heavy pan, and it isn't nearly as noisey when it makes bread.

So far so good!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This has been a great machine so far! The loaves come out great and delicious. I love how you put the yeast in the special compartment and it works just fine. We don't use the recipes that came with it but instead use the The Bread Machine Cookbook by Donna German. There are great recipes in there. Lately we've been enjoying a tasty cheddar cheese loaf. Yum!
